We Did It! $25 Million for Renewable Energy in 09 Alaska Budget!

Congratulations Renewable Energy Campaign, we did it! Last week the Legislature voted to include $25 million in the Alaska budget for Renewable Energy Development! Though this was less than what we were asking, ($50 million,) $25 million will go a long way to getting a lot of really cool Renewable Energy projects up and running! Thanks for all your signature gathering, letters to the editor, interviews, and talking with your legislators that made this happen!

Now - On to Phase 2 of the Renewable Energy Campaign!
We have a lot of work to do still to educate Alaskans about the potential for Renewable Energy - and to make sure that the Governor puts more money for Renewable Energy in the budget for next year.

Currently the following people are conducting research and creating slides for the presentation:
- Nara and Robyn (Anchorage): Solar
- Noah (Healy): Biomass
- Janelle (Chefornak): Wind
- Talitha (Juneau): Hydro

They are each also getting ready to give their first presentations to their communities. We need your help to do more presentations around Alaska!

Join us at our next Teleconference Meeting on Tuesday, May 5 at 6pm to line up our summer plans and discuss where we will do our presentations! (1-800-791-2345, passcode 33749#)

Collect Lots of Signatures in the Next Week and Win a Trip to Juneau to Deliver Them!

Campaign Call Notes from March 26

The Race is On! How many signatures can you gather on the Petition in the next week? If you gather more than anyone else, AYEA will send you to Juneau to hand-deliver the signatures to our Legislators! Report how many signatures you have to Maeve (taylorm@nwf.org) or call 339-3907 by Friday April 3.

Fax your signatures to Maeve at (907) 339-3980
or Scan and Email them to taylorm@nwf.org.

We only have a couple of weeks left to try and get the $50 million for Renewable Energy into the State Budget this year! Here are ideas on where to gather signatures:
- At your school (gather between classes, at lunch, or hold an Assembly!)
- At local businesses like the grocery store.
- At community events or meetings.
- Ask all your Friends on Facebook and MySpace to sign the online petition at www.ayea.org!

You can also help get the money in the budget by writing Letters to the Editor and to your legislators!
- To find out how to write a letter to the editor go to: http://ayea.org/WordPress/resources/action-tools/
- To find out who your legislator is look at the Blog under RE Resources and click on “Find Your Legislator”.
- Hold a Letter Writing Party with your friends next week and send out lots of letters supporting Renewable Energy!

But the Campaign won’t be over after this spring’s Legislative Session! We have lots to do to make sure that there is money in the Alaska budget next year – so we’ll be making presentations and gathering signatures all summer! Then next fall, Campaign Leaders will get to take all the signatures gathered and present them to the Governor!

Get Involved on Our Next Campaign Call – Wednesday, April 8 at 6pm (call in at 1-800-791-2345 and enter the passcode 33749#.)
